Hot Plants for 2012

Abelia x grandiflora ‘Kaleidoscope’
Abelia x grandiflora 'Kaleidoscope'
Leonotis leonurus
Leonotis leonurus

Get ready for an exciting year of unexpected seasonal delights. Try out dramatic contrasts in color, texture and form with these exceptional plants that look great in the most demanding conditions. Juxtapose the dark drama of black plants with playfully vivid colors. Flatter bold architectural plants with lush low-growing plants that are surprisingly water-wise. Enjoy long-term color without a lot of expense by adding plants that change with the seasons, offering new interest with each. Each plant was carefully chosen for its delightfully unique appearance, resilience in dry weather conditions, and an ability to thrive with minimal maintenance.

Aeonium arboreum ‘Zwartkop’ (‘Schwarzkopf’)
Aeonium arboreum 'Zwartkop' ('Schwarzkopf') – Dramatic near-black rosettes atop 3-4 foot tall stalks make Black Aeonium a standout in the garden. This water-wise succulent produces bright yellow star-shaped flowers in summer that contrast nicely against the dark foliage. 'Zwartkop' is a wonderful backdrop plant, especially when combined with the more colorful plants listed here.
Leymus condensatus ‘Canyon Prince'
Leymus condensatus 'Canyon Prince' – Elegant and adaptable, the luscious blue foliage of Canyon Prince Wild Rye looks terrific in a perennial border, brimming from a container or set apart as a dramatic accent plant. The bold arching leaves are topped with flowering stalks that rise 1-2 feet above the foliage in summer. This California native should be cut to the ground every few years for best appearance.
Abelia x grandiflora ‘Kaleidoscope’
Abelia x grandiflora 'Kaleidoscope' – True to its name, Kaleidoscope produces a spectacular changing display of color. The variegated foliage is bright yellow with light green centers in spring, deepening in summer to a darker green. Brilliant red stems provide a unique contrast. White, bell shaped flowers burst open in late summer and continue well into autumn. Showcase this compact beauty as an accent plant or wow visitors with a mass planting.
Cordyline australis ‘Pink Stripe’ (Dracaena a.)
Cordyline australis 'Pink Stripe' (Dracaena a.) – Pink Stripe Grass Palm has bold lines and extraordinary color, making it a stunning container specimen or a dramatic focal point in the landscape. This trunk-forming Cordyline has flamboyant pink and cream striped green foliage. Grows to an elegant 5 feet or more with age. Needs good light for best color.
Leonotis leonurus
Leonotis leonurus – Here's a cool cat that birds love. If you're hunting for a consistently colorful plant, Lion's Tail will delight you with a blizzard of orange tufts that burst forth at the end of summer. This showy shrub requires little maintenance but looks its best with a little grooming of the dead flowers. The whorled clusters of bright orange flowers are a magnet for hummingbirds and butterflies.
Ophiopogon planiscapus ‘Nigrescens’ (‘Arabicus’)
Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens' (''Arabicus') – Black Mondo Grass is a diminutive plant with a big impact. This slow-growing perennial is one of the blackest plants available. A great groundcover or border plant, Black Mondo is easy to grow, even in shade. Summer brings clusters of tiny whitish lavender flowers that give way to bluish black berries lasting well into winter.
