Kniphofias are upright clump-forming perennials with short, thick rhizomes and grasslike foliage and tight, oblong-shaped clusters of tubular flowers that resemble a glowing torch or poker. K. uvaria has coral red buds that open to orange and fade to yellow flowers. The coarse foliage is lax, linear, keeled, and finely toothed.
